Riviera: A Modern Classic Bar Design by studiomk27

A Sinuous and Cozy Space for Socializing and Entertainment

Open in 1949, the Bar Riviera, during the 60’s and 70’s had been an important meeting place for the intellectual left of Sao Paulo – a type of piece de resistance during the Brazilian military regime. Living through the glorious epoch, already quite decadent, the establishment had closed its doors. All of the architectural intervention was done in a simple and bare manner so as not to lose the characteristics of the place avoiding a luxurious connotation.

The Riviera bar, designed by studiomk27, is a unique and captivating space that seamlessly blends modern design with classic elements. The design pays homage to the bar's rich history while creating a contemporary and inviting atmosphere for socializing and entertainment.

The standout feature of the Riviera bar is the sinuous counter that spans the entire ground floor. The counter, made of Corian resin, follows the curved lines of the glass brick facade, creating a visually striking and cohesive design. In the center of the counter, waiters and barmen serve the public, while clients can openly see the whole space, fostering a sense of connection and community. The ground floor also houses the restrooms, conveniently located near the counter.

A sculpture-like staircase, originally part of the space, leads to the first floor, where a large salon and kitchen are located. The space on the first floor is versatile and can accommodate nightly shows with live music, reminiscent of a jazz club. To facilitate these performances, the design incorporates a dismountable stage, a light and sound control room, and a wooden shell for optimal acoustics.

The choice of furniture in the Riviera bar reflects a blend of classic modern design and contemporary aesthetics. Bertoia bar stools on the ground floor and the Danish 7 Series chair by Arne Jacobsen add a touch of elegance and comfort to the space. The layout of the entire bar is flexible and can be easily rearranged to accommodate different uses and events.

While the ground floor focuses on creating an intimate and informal ambiance, the first floor offers a panoramic view of the surrounding urban landscape through large glass windows. This connection with the cityscape adds a sense of openness and dynamism to the space.

The materials used in the Riviera bar were carefully chosen to ensure durability and create a cozy atmosphere. The glass brick facade, Corian resin counter, and curved wooden gable and walls contribute to the bar's unique aesthetic. The granilite floor, a mixture of marble, granite, sand, cement, and water, along with the resin and rock, are resistant to the intense use of the space.

The Riviera bar project, which started in December 2012 and finished in October 2013, faced the challenge of reopening an important meeting place while preserving its historical significance. The architectural intervention successfully maintained the bar's character and history, avoiding a luxurious connotation and creating a space that is both welcoming and respectful of its past.

The Riviera bar design by studiomk27 is a testament to the power of blending modern and classic elements to create a unique and captivating space. With its sinuous counter, versatile layout, and attention to detail, the Riviera bar offers a one-of-a-kind experience for patrons seeking a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere.
